Introduction and Background: The Rise and Risks of Plastics

Plastics are man-made materials made of polymers. They are lightweight, durable, and resistant to chemicals. Created as substitutes for ivory in the 1860s, plastics now play a big role in many aspects of life. However, their durability causes serious environmental issues. Plastics break down slowly, leading to pollution that harms ecosystems, food systems, and human health. Microplastics can cause serious health problems. The demand for eco-friendly alternatives, such as bioplast

Definition and Types of Eco-friendly Plastics

The production processes for eco-friendly plastics and regular plastics differ greatly. Sugarcane and starch are renewable resources used to make biodegradable polymers. In a matter of months, microbes can convert them into non-toxic components. Petrochemical-based regular plastics contaminate the environment and lead to microplastic issues. New technologies, such as carbon recycling and enzyme embedding, are being developed to produce biodegradable plastics and change polyester into compostable materials. Next Generational Industrial Biotechnology (NGIB) aims to turn agricultural resources into sustainable chemicals while reducing production contamination.

Environmental Benefits and Sustainability

Eco-friendly products reduce environmental impact by minimising pollutants, breaking down faster than conventional plastics, and resulting in less waste in landfills and cleaner oceans. They originate from sustainable resources, enhance soil fertility, and decrease harmful compounds released during decomposition. Additionally, they consume less energy and generate fewer greenhouse gases, which helps lower carbon footprints. These products support recycling and the circular economy by having recyclable packaging, ultimately leading to healthier ecosystems and wildlife.

Challenges, Misconceptions, and Policy Gaps

High costs and slow acceptance are barriers to sustainable production. The need for resource efficiency, reducing emissions from polluting industries, and the high costs of adopting sustainable technologies are significant issues. Managing a sustainable supply chain and following environmental regulations adds to the challenges. The higher prices of eco-friendly products often turn consumers away, and misconceptions about their durability and effectiveness limit market growth. The shift to sustainable manufacturing faces challenges. These include gaps in infrastructure and laws, high initial costs, a lack of information, inconsistent regulations, and resistance from within organisations.

Global Progress and Leading Companies

Leading companies in the shift to eco-friendly products include Adidas, Patagonia, and Nike. Adidas makes clothing and shoes from recovered ocean trash in partnership with Parley for the Oceans. By 2024, it will only use recycled polyester. Patagonia promotes recycling through its "Worn Wear" program and uses recycled materials in its outdoor gear. Through the "Nike Grind" program, Nike incorporates recycled plastics into its products. It also aims for a closed-loop system with its "Move to Zero" campaign. This shows a strong dedication to sustainability.

Corporate and National Efforts Towards Sustainability

In Bangladesh, more consumers are becoming aware of environmental issues and are favouring eco-friendly products. In response, businesses are offering alternatives to plastic, such as reusable cloth and jute bags. Jute plays a key role in this shift because of its sustainability; it supports both environmental protection and the revival of the jute industry. The government is taking steps like banning single-use plastics and launching the "Plastic-Free Bangladesh" campaign to address plastic pollution and promote biodegradable options. This collaboration is fostering a more sustainable business environment as consumers embrace eco-friendly practices.

Global Development and Prospects

Research and industry leaders are focusing on eco-friendly plastics to reduce pollution and improve sustainability. Key developments include biodegradable plastics like PLA and PCL, compostable plastics with enzyme nanoparticles, and recyclable materials like PDK that enable endless recycling. Bio-based plastics made from renewable resources lower reliance on fossil fuels. At the same time, progress in minimalist packaging and reusable systems aims to further reduce waste and promote a circular economy.
